Liberty before Liberalism is based on Quentin Skinner's Inaugural Lecture as Regius Professor of Modern History in the University of Cambridge, delivered in November 1997. Professor Skinner has been awarded the Balzan Prize Life Time Achievement Award for Political Thought, History and Theory. Namier-Butterfield-Pocock的史學史問題隨處可見，“自由”問題則明顯展露齣Berlin觀念的過量溢齣。頗受前代影響的學術關懷，也許纔是Skinner總是拋棄處於顯著地位的清教-神學論爭，而換之以所謂“新羅馬”的真實原因。

What remains under-explored is the positive account of nature underlying the neo-Roman conception of freedom, along with the republican strand of classical liberalism (e.g. Mill, Tocqueville) which treats civic virtue as the sinew of a health body politic.
