斯金纳的故事和内容与波考克分析英国革命的部分大体一致，不过相比波考克挖掘现代政治容纳“特殊性”的宏大理论野心而言，斯金纳更像一个讲故事的老者。斯金纳延续了他在《霍布斯与共和主义自由》中的分析套路，并将共和派的哲学立场追溯到马基雅维利——在分析共和派的立场时，马基雅维利的引文都会准点出场。不过，从学者的分析看，他对马基雅维利阐释并不成功，弥尔顿和哈灵顿的原始文本也很难支持他的分析。

惭愧表示这是我第一本从头读到尾的英文书，内容本身不难，但总觉得和波考克的说法有点微妙不同。

Namier-Butterfield-Pocock的史学史问题随处可见，“自由”问题则明显展露出Berlin观念的过量溢出。颇受前代影响的学术关怀，也许才是Skinner总是抛弃处于显著地位的清教-神学论争，而换之以所谓“新罗马”的真实原因。
