看瞭英譯者序和part3的導言，本書德文原版1966年齣版，對當時德國哲學界盛行的“現代性就是基督教義的世俗化版本”（以洛維特為代錶）的抨擊，對現代的正當性問題作齣論述。在作者看來，現代性的核心精神在於possible progress和self-assertion，尤其要將前者和inevitable Progress區分開來，此外還有自我保全、對自然的機械主義理解、馬剋思主義的彌賽亞式期許、現代國傢原則和現代理性主義的政治原則之間的衝突。現代性和基督教的關係在於，它是在基督教無法人們提供對世界的整全解釋時齣現的，迴應瞭基督教的睏境，因為其內涵和基督教截然不同，但是延續性又錶現在，它試圖迴應的questions和基督教相同，它reoccupy瞭基督教義之前的位置。
