V.S.奈保爾（V.S.Naipaul）：

英國著名作傢。1932年生於特立尼達島上一個印度移民傢庭，1950年進入牛津大學攻讀英國文學，畢業後遷居倫敦。

50年代開始寫作，著有《米格爾街》、《斯通與騎士夥伴》、《自由國度》、《河灣》、“印度三部麯”、《非洲的假麵劇》等。2001年，榮獲諾貝爾文學奬。

更喜歡前麵的幾個短篇，同名的短篇還沒有讀完

有點失望。兩個短篇還不錯，主打的短長篇令人厭煩，通篇沒話找話的大段景物描寫，沒看齣起到什麼必不可少的作用。其實整本書就是在講cultural displacement，無論“從低嚮高”追求更好的生活，還是“從高到低”尋求自由，最終都事與願違無所適從。

我看短評裏大傢偏愛的前兩個短篇時，心裏隻有WHAT THE ACTUAL FXXK 同名中篇纔能說得上是有質感。個人生活經曆大概是奈保爾創作的最重要源泉，他寫特立尼達的小城故事，清甜的熱帶氣息讓人動容；寫白人去南非尋找自由，能完美與人物共情；寫印度人的苦難，讓人覺得他歧視自己的種族。

先看的《大河湾》，这是我读的奈保尔的第二本书，并不是很理想。因为《自由国度》是获奖作品，所以理所当然有期待，所以希望落空时很失落就是了。我比较喜欢第一个篇《合众为一》，将一个印度仆人死缠烂打主人之后跟着去了美国，在哪里开始觉醒，逃离主人开始人生，最后妥协...
