读过一本毛姆的短篇小说集，一个非常擅长说故事的作家。但是这本长篇前半部分还是读的非常艰难（一半因为几百年没读英文书了，另一边因为都是在飞行时间看的，非常容易睡着）。但是Strickland从法国到大溪地之后确实不忍心放下来，借伍尔芙说的，确实像在自己平庸的生活中迎面撞上了一座巨大的冰山。毛姆的确聪明、幽默又克制，赞美毛姆。
评分看完就理解为什么毛姆是三流作家了。情节一点都不引人入胜，就是把俗套桥段拼一下，用流水账的方式毫无起伏地叙述一下。最讨厌的一点是第一人称叙述的第三人称视角，显得特别自以为是，以至于所有角色都显得很做作。作为大溪地的旅游营销倒还不错。
评分充斥其中misogyny不能否定这是部有技巧的好小说。读者们目眩神迷注视着怪异的"月亮"主角肆意人生，自然的忽略了几个面目被扭曲的"六便士"女人以及毛姆可鄙可怜的自我揭露。简单来说，同性恋在某些国家请别结婚，不然会变态的。
