第3、4章。历史叙述是文字构成的人工制品/文学虚构。一反弗莱将历史同文学对立起来、并以之为直接的话语演述，怀特强调历史叙述者编织情节的能力：把事实加以编码、裁剪，使之坐落于编年记述的顺序中，而决定论式/末世论式/启示录式叙述的分别，在于众多事件中，何者被重点突出；仰赖历史学家和读者共享的前文类情节结构，方得以将原先被遗忘、忽视、压抑的事件重新打捞，使本已生疏的变得亲切可感；描述一个事件所用的语言，预铸了史学家对该事件的看法，故而历史叙述乃是蕴藉着诗心的构型，一种神话化的过程。历史学和历史哲学的相似性大于差异，皆需从特殊提炼普遍以便整合成综合论述，不存在相对性表述；而在浅层的表现底下隐含着潜在的、富有比喻意味的意义；历史话语类型的区分取决于其选择的语言形态和修辞(如隐喻、转喻、提喻、反讽等)。
