本书是法国著名现象学家列维纳斯的成名代表作之一。在本书中他认为être（通常译为“存在”，本书译为“是”）与本质、超越与冷漠并不等同，他更注重从责任、身体、主体性、他者与意义生成的关系上，关注现象学意义上的当下的存在。把现代化历程中不断受冲击而摇摇欲坠的西方伦理学，从以个人为中心的牢笼中解脱出来，使之重建在对‘另一者’的无代价的无限关怀的基础上，论证了‘另一者’高于一切、具有绝对的无限性的新价值观，从而创立了伦理学的‘无可超越’的本体论优越地位。
本书的翻译是一次空前的尝试。译者在综合权衡“存在”“本质”等译名的优缺点之后，放弃了这些常见的译名，转而以“是”和“是其所是”来译本书最重要的两个概念：être与essence。由这两个概念的译名出发，译者为本书的核心哲学概念构建出了致密、连贯的译名群。

Autrement qu'être ou au-delà de l'essence(Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence) 的确，être（being）的译法作为“是”或“是其所是”更贴近这个词最根本的含义，但译者的努力真的不到位啊，这译名中文都不通啊！简单直接译为“别于存在或超乎本质”不就好了吗
