In The World in Guangzhou, Gordon Mathews explores the question of how the city became such a center of "low-end" globalization and shows what we can learn from that experience similar transformations elsewhere in the world.

Through detailed ethnographic portraits, Mathews reveals a world of globalization based on informality, reputation, and trust rather than on formal contracts. How, he asks, can such informal relationships emerge between two groups—Chinese and Sub-Saharan Africans—that don't share a common language, culture, or religion? And what happens when Africans move beyond their status as temporary residents and begin to put down roots and establish families?

重庆大厦续篇，作者还是一如既往地单纯傻呼呼，但采访内容很有趣，作者对未来很乐观，尽管中国种族主义严重，极力阻止外国移民，但他认为中国一定会从ethnic国家变成civic国家，这是大国的必由之路。。。不管中国会怎么样，广州作为全球低端制造业中心确实在衰落，估计会让位给越南或印度的某个城市，广州的外国人又会搬去这些地方，终究只是昙花一现

雖然小北三元里廣元西那一帶一不小心就會不知道走到哪裡去了，但是在商鋪和商鋪之間以及小巷與小巷之間看到這些生活在廣州的外國人以及觀察他們的交流還是很有意思的
