著者簡介

Anne Tyler was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1941 and grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. This is her 17th novel. Her 11th, Breathing Lessons, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. A member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, she lives in Baltimore, Maryland.

因想讀一本family saga, 是時候感受一下這位prolific, 描寫傢庭極具洞察力的作者的文風。從30年代到當下，這是一個傢庭四代人的故事。作者用幾乎揶揄的語調，描述瞭一個個鮮明的人物和他們的互動，讀起來輕鬆有趣。但它超越傢庭幽默小品的地方在於它的中心是一個反美國夢的故事（並不是我們努力工作，我們在一起，幸福就是結局這樣的夢）。它也是一個我們鄰居，或我們自己的故事：從開篇夫妻倆接到孩子電話開始互相埋冤起，作者就簡明地錶達這是一個普通平凡的傢庭，也沒什麼偉大故事，沒有戲劇性的分分閤閤。但之所以寫他們，就是因為這傢人和大多數人一樣，自認為自己的傢庭還挺“special"的。還有其他可引起共鳴的主題：傢和歸屬，自由和取捨，父母和偏愛，時間和它的毀滅力量。又一位讓我驚喜的作傢。
