Michael Berry's discussions with such directors as Ang Lee ( Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Zhang Yimou ( Hero), Chen Kaige ( Farewell My Concubine), Stanley Kwan ( Lan Yu), Tsai Ming-Liang ( Vive l'Amour), Edward Yang ( Yi Yi), and Hou Hsiao-hsien ( Flowers of Shanghai) offer an eclectic and comprehensive portrait of contemporary Chinese cinema. In interviews that capture each filmmaker's unique vision, the subjects discuss their formative years, the ideas and influences that shaped their work, film aesthetics, battles with censors and studios, the mingling of commercial and art film, and the future of Chinese cinema in a transnational context. Berry's introduction to the collection provides an overview of Chinese cinema in the second half of the twentieth century, placing the directors and their work in a wider historical and cultural context.

著者簡介

白睿文（Michael Berry），1974年齣生於美國芝加哥，哥倫比亞大學現代中國文學與電影博士，現職加州大學聖巴巴拉分校東亞係副教授。主要研究領域為當代華語文學、電影、流行文化和翻譯學。

著作包括Speaking in Images：Interviews with Contemporary Chinese Filmmakers（2005），《痛史：現代中國文學與電影的曆史創傷》（A HistoryofPain：Trauma in Modem Chinese Fiction and Film，2008）與《賈樟柯的故鄉三部麯》XJiaZhangke’SHometown Trilogy．2009）。

中英譯作包括王安憶《長恨歌》（The Song of Everlasting Sorrow，2007）、餘華《活著》（To Live，2004）、葉兆言《一九三七年的愛情》（Nanjing 1937：A Love Story，2003）、張大春《我妹妹》與《野孩子》（Wild Kids：Two Novels About Growing Up，2000）。

这本书和易立竟的"中国导演探访录”比较起来，你会发现易立竟一点不懂电影的。从比较中才看出光影言语的作者深厚的电影理解。书能帮助怎么欣赏电影。现在主流影迷80、90后需要更多的这样的书来帮助提高鉴赏能力而不是照单全收那些充数之作。

有几篇很真诚。张艺谋说的很好，贾樟柯依然很聪明有口才并且知道自己要什么怎么要。台湾几个说的不错，香港几个么都比较自以为是了。但个人觉得本书不太好之处即over-interpretations的地方比较多，当然执笔者一个巴掌拍不响，要有被访者的“配合”才可以。并且我也觉得通过阅...
