題解:本書意在藉由探討原始文化中對於不淨與禁忌的觀念,闡發作者對原始文化的構造與其運作的理解。文化的主要功能為建立秩序及維繫社群運作,對於何為淨、何為不淨的觀念,當然也與文化的此一面向有關。人類基本的認識方式為替事物分類,並以此建立人與人間、人與自然的秩序。不淨的事物具有在分類架構中曖昧、模糊、逾越界線的特性,因此造成對秩序的威脅;然而亦可說,正是此種「危險」的可能,從反向鞏固了文化的結構本身。原始文化中的儀式或法術,其實是展演或反映了其社會構造,不能說是幼稚、無知的初級心靈的表現。原始文化與現代文化的差異在於前者為整全的,後者則是分化的,以幼稚/成熟、野蠻/文明的視角來觀察兩者,是一種狹隘的視角,無能帶給我們對文化健全的了解。
