Of Human Bondage is the first and most autobiographical of Maugham’s masterpieces. It is the story of Philip Carey, an orphan eager for life, love and adventure. After a few months studying in Heidelberg, and a brief spell in Paris as would-be artist, Philip settles in London to train as a doctor. And that is where he meets Mildred, the loud but irresistible waitress with whom he plunges into a formative, tortured and masochistic affair which very nearly ruins him.

著者簡介

William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 and lived in Paris until he was ten. He was educated at Kings School, Canterbury, and at Heidelberg University. He spent some time at St. Thomas Hospital with the idea of practising medicine, but the success of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, published in 1897, won him over to literature. Of Human Bondage, the first of his masterpieces, came out in 1915, and with the publication in 1919 of The Moon and Sixpence his reputation as a novelist was established. At the same time his fame as a successful playwright and writer was being consolidated with acclaimed productions of various plays and the publication of several short story collections. His other works include travel books, essays, criticism and the autobiographical The Summing Up and A Writers Notebook.

In 1927 Somerset Maugham settled in the South of France and lived there until his death in 1965

一口氣纔讀完30%，這口氣不要憋得太長…讀毛叔這本書，就好像真的跟著主人公經曆瞭他的一個一個人生階段，非常寫實，主人公的成長也是循序漸進，沒有所謂的性格突變，隻有理所當然。

剛開始不喜歡男主人公，覺得他眼高手低，自以為是，性格軟弱，但越到後麵越希望他能找到幸福。

毛姆的語言和邏輯性真的無人能敵，看到後來，真的就是真心的希望Phillip能夠幸福。

主要是孤獨吧，因此可以理解 Philip 與 Mildred 之間的情感糾葛。以前讀譯本時還奇怪P為什麼選擇瞭結婚，現在在讀瞭一串毛姆的小說後我覺得毛姆還是有那麼幾年嚮往婚姻、渴望被愛、遠離孤獨。所以他把結局收成瞭結婚，也算他瞭結瞭他的念想吧。另外毛姆後來棄醫從文，因此P從醫後的故事他也不能寫、不好寫瞭，點到為止即可。P或毛姆真的是很孤獨，全書的高頻單詞就是 Solitary.
