In this, her first full-length novel, Austen also fixes her sharp, ironic gaze on other kinds of contemporary novel, especially the Gothic school made famous by Ann Radcliffe. Catherine's reading becomes intertwined with her social and romantic adventures, adding to the uncertainties and embarrassments she must undergo before finding happiness.

这是奥斯丁早期的一部作品，书商买下后迟迟不发，直到13年后。奥斯丁在为该书写的广告中指出：这十三年里，时代、地点、行为举止、书籍风格和人的观念都有所改变。言外之意，该书一面世就已经过时了。我感觉小说的叙述不及其他作品流畅，作者的在场和插入式的解释说明让读者失去了许多探索的乐趣。

现在再读为了写论文的。奥斯丁的戏谑语经久不衰，不过缺点就是往往浮夸过于深邃，很多是为了戏谑而戏谑，看多了就会产生对耍小聪明的厌倦感，相比我更喜欢现实主义写作。不过奥斯丁我语言从一开始影响我的写作，到现在仍然重要。

Not Jane Austen's best or most mature creation, in either story telling or writing style. However this was her first book, her wit and sarcasm were at their best, most honestly and artlessly. Just like the young Cathy, it's young, innocent, refreshing.I kept picturing a young Jane herself laughing at other's follies while writing those lines.
