喬納森•貝特，華威大學教授，主要研究方嚮為莎士比亞和文藝復興時期的文學。主要著有《莎士比亞的天賦》（1997）以及一部關於莎士比亞的深度傳記《時代的靈魂》（2008），後者從伊麗莎白女王時期的文化背景齣發，分析瞭莎士比亞的思想曆程。他創作的《約翰•剋萊爾傳》（2003）獲得瞭英國曆史最悠久的兩大文學奬項：霍桑登奬和詹姆斯•泰特•布萊剋奬。

既非編年體，亦非紀傳體，與之前看的文學史讀物在編排上有很大不同。從兒童文學談起，依次探討瞭文學的定義、起源、及發展階段等；然後挑選重要人物分述瞭詩歌、戲劇、小說三部分；最後探討瞭何謂ENGLISH literature。條理清晰，其中觀點還是很具可讀性的，人物作品都信手拈來；但並非文學史，主次太過分明，不少大佬也不過寥寥幾筆帶過，比較適閤對英國文學有過一定瞭解後做深化閱讀。
