这门书也是功能语法的入门级教材。内容可谓是深入浅出。作者汤姆普森原来并非功能语言学者。所以作者在以韩礼德经典理论为框架的基础上，除了将原本艰涩的定义解释的浅显易懂之外，同时也融入了自己对于功能语法的独到见解。这是需要我们在阅读过程中学习的地方，切勿盲目接受一切你所读到的甚至是读懂的。
