著者简介

约翰·威廉斯（John Edward Williams, 1922—1994），美国作家，诗人，学者。辍过学，当过电台播音，从过军。退役后入大学就读并获博士学位。

于1945年-1985年间在母校丹佛大学任教，教授大学英语及创意写作。曾编辑出版学术文集《文艺复兴时期的英语诗歌》，也创作过两本诗集。

一生只写了四部小说：《惟有黑夜》（1948）、《屠夫十字镇》（1960）、《斯通纳》（1965）、《奥古斯都》（1973，本书当年获得美国国家图书奖）。

对约翰·威廉斯的写作，英国作家朱利安·巴恩斯评论：“当我称之为‘绝佳’，我的意思是它们（《屠夫十字镇》《斯通纳》）已经超越了各自类型范围内的评价标准。”

谁没见过“the last radiance of the setting sun”的景象。谁又不曾经历“衰退”。然而没人能把个体在整体自然前的衰弱和无力表现的这么真挚，那些回光返照的，是平凡生活里的光辉，那闪现的永恒时刻，带着疲倦的振奋、瞬间的痛苦，看来太寻常，同时也太美。允许他们出现在自己的生活中并尽力保持自身不受损伤，他沉默而抑郁的生命是如此鲜活，鲜血气喘吁吁地从里面喷涌，稍后就凝结成了颤抖的啫喱。

读这本书让我想起去年很喜欢的电影Youth，想起里面的Simple Song。看似平淡，暗地里不断有东西在碎裂。语言是simple and delicate，实在是写得很好的英文
