著者簡介

Thi Bui was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the United States as a child. She studied art and law and thought about becoming a civil rights lawyer, but became a public school teacher instead. Bui lives in Berkeley, California, with her son, her husband, and her mother. The Best We Could Do is her debut graphic novel.

不是二代移民典型的身份認同作品。首一整章寫新生，messy而艱難。中間大部分是父母在越南的傢國曆史。在越南螻蟻求生，至齣走美國，隱約並置的是一條“重生”産道。末章落腳於生老病死，點題的“盡力而為”(存活)，是為父母的信條，亦是“幸存者”移民二代真正的文化遺産，刻在血肉裏的處世之道

目前讀過最好的graphic novel，從成為母親重走自己母親的道路並切身地理解傢庭的含義開始，迴溯自己作為refugee的過往並試圖恢復重構父母的經曆，多視角敘事好評，作為圖像的首尾銜接、結構、漫畫與插畫的混閤運用也經得起推敲，言辭精妙。母親曾經優越而極為不易的為一傢人營生，父親看起來確實廢柴，年輕的時候倒也是一番智勇。更多是在說我們這群boat people的過往如何塑造瞭現在，關注在一個傢庭的變遷史之內，對於越南美國人的集體記憶刻畫不多。最後說迴越南語的時刻印象最深。

當時因為是比爾蓋茨推薦書單，就去圖書館藉來看瞭。漫畫，讀的很快。我沒有那麼特彆喜歡，更喜歡同體裁的柬埔寨裔美籍的那個女作傢的迴憶錄和華裔的那本the joy luck club

Love every detail of this book. Such a meaningful reading right after my trip to Chongqing. 今年恰逢婆婆外公金婚紀念，外公八十大壽。上周迴去看瞭好多老照片，對傢裏的曆史非常感興趣。The best we could do這個標題也很有意思，讓我想起瞭他們在曆史節點中的選擇，讓這個傢成為可能，也間接塑造瞭我們。
