On the eve of Angolan independence, Ludo bricks herself into her apartment, where she will remain for the next thirty years. She lives off vegetables and pigeons, burns her furniture and books to stay alive and keeps herself busy by writing her story on the walls of her home.

The outside world slowly seeps into Ludo’s life through snippets on the radio, voices from next door, glimpses of a man fleeing his pursuers and a note attached to a bird’s foot. Until one day she meets Sabalu, a young boy from the street who climbs up to her terrace.

著者简介

José Eduardo Agualusa was born in Huambo, Angola, in 1960, and is one of the leading literary voices in Angola and the Portuguese-speaking world.His novel Creole was awarded the Portuguese Grand Prize for Literature, and The Book of Chameleons won the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize in 2007. Agualusa lives between Portugal, Angola and Brazil.

"A General Theory Of Oblivion" An amazing book with a nice title and impressive cover. It is a story about a lady who lives in an apartment for more than thirty years and has never gone out once, because she is afraid of open spaces. This book is given a strong historical background bases on the Angolan independence.

极富画面感和电影感，读毕才知道小说的雏形是作者为导演朋友写的剧本。多线叙事如明亮纤维不停螺旋上升拧成一道光。不同阶层欲求的人，他们的欣然和痛苦、孤独和挣扎、过往和未来、善和恶、一念之间和念念不忘像一块块小碎片貌似随机出现在三十年内战的大时代背景下，最后拼出一副完美的拼图。文字被淡淡的蓝色阴影笼罩，叙事描写节奏松弛有度，如梦似幻既轻又重。作者既会讲故事又温柔有悲悯之心，阅读体验像他写的“urgent desperate euphoria”：晴朗的春日夜晚独酌梅子酒，春风沉醉中贪杯而不自知，回过神来已怀抱着无限哀愁泪流满面。

阿瓜卢萨是个讲故事的高手(也许太会讲故事了太多巧合太多曲折太多反转) A man with a good story is practically a king. 就好像非洲那片土地的活力和繁茂浸染着他的写作，同时欧洲文化(书中提到很多葡语西班牙语作家)又赋予他格律和格调。我爱他的那种轻逸的特质，也爱他可以"螺狮壳里做道场"的艺术，更爱他广博深厚的同情与理解。书中最后老妇和重生部落老者(儿子）的对白: "We should practise forgetting, reaching for oblivion." "My father doesnt want to forget. Forgetting is dying, he says. Forgetting is surrender."
