What happens when this rationality transposes the constituent elements of democracy into an economic register? In Undoing the Demos, Wendy Brown explains how democracy itself is imperiled. The demos disintegrates into bits of human capital; concerns with justice bow to the mandates of growth rates, credit ratings, and investment climates; liberty submits to the imperative of human capital appreciation; equality dissolves into market competition; and popular sovereignty grows incoherent. Liberal democratic practices may not survive these transformations. Radical democratic dreams may not either.

In an original and compelling argument, Brown explains how and why neoliberal reason undoes the political form and political imaginary it falsely promises to secure and reinvigorate. Through meticulous analyses of neoliberalized law, political practices, governance, and education, she charts the new common sense. Undoing the Demos makes clear that for democracy to have a future, it must become an object of struggle and rethinking.

作者一上来先撇清这本书不想再重复一遍“钱和市场是万恶的根源”，转而从源头反思democracy/freedom/subject等概念，援引政治经济文化教育法律各个领域例子证实neoliberalism as a form of political rationality/normative reason has converted every dimension of human life。缺点是整本书结构涣散（跟她老伴一个样？）想什么来什么，比如前半本认真讨论的gender/family/individual的关系到后半部分只字不提，直接跳到福柯大谈特谈governmentality、homo oeconomicus, 幸好对其的概念延伸都挺有意思
