最便利初学的一本希腊化史料选，从编排上也能看出目前希腊化历史研究的几个热点：基于纸莎草文献对托勒密埃及经济、社会和行政制度的研究；希腊化王权的理念与实践；希腊城邦的政治变革及其与继业者王国和罗马的互动。虽然如Austin在前言中谈到的，今日（2006年）与该书第一版问世时（1981年）相比，希腊化历史已经从少人问津变成了古典学领域的大热门。不过受制于史料的匮乏，很多有趣、细致的问题目前还很难突破。
