這是托賓30歲左右寫的一本書，1985年英國和愛爾蘭達成一項Anglo-Irish Agreement，北愛爾蘭邊境局勢益發緊張，當記者的托賓就在那時候以徒步的方式走訪邊境南北的村莊城鎮，記錄下他觀察到采訪到一切，這份勇氣就令人摺服。托賓的散文和小說在寫法上風格迥異，他的小說總是不斷潛入人物內心，而他的nonfiction卻通過一種純粹直接的事實組閤和敘述來呈現要錶達的內容。最近連續讀瞭好幾本和愛爾蘭曆史、英愛關係、北愛衝突有關的書，很大的一個感觸是，宗教分歧不是問題的關鍵，暴力的核心是仇恨。
