真是挺不錯的一部著作，為寫論文看瞭其中一部。政治學教科書的通說，從來都是SNTV製度不利於大政黨，而相對有利於小政黨（川人 2004）。Cox和菅原的論法則在於，大政黨可以有效地調節黨內的立候補，而在野黨之間的選舉協力總是時聚時散的。這部著作算是找到瞭一個中間的變量來解釋在野黨選舉協力上存在的問題：SNTV製度下在野黨互不兼容地組織票和政黨組織的特性。一個政黨的躍進，就意味著另一個政黨的削弱。不過此書的研究基本上都是案例研究，也就是因果機製的敘述性分析。大概就推定基於作者此種解釋的因果效果多少是不那麼容易證實的。不過，一般來說英文著作的日本政治研究案例敘述的完成度都是非常高的，研究設計也還不錯，這一點，日文著作反倒處處相形見絀，讀瞭大量論文對於人們認知度的更新，也貢獻不大，，，
