本書從TACIT KNOWING（the thing we know but we cannot tell）講起，將不同種知識能力的分層和進化理論類比，從而一步一步推齣the highest level as human's greatness。而這個GREATNESS是如何顯現的呢，它並不是像蘇聯那樣宣傳的在MORAL PERFECTION之下的科學實用主義，而是指齣科學研究者對於不可知的真實，真理深切的COMMITMENT（基於the tacit knowing）一步一步建造瞭現有科學體係，而正是在這種教育，感召和不能為人所解析的探索之中，科學代錶著一種無畏的對於真相的探索成就瞭人與他者不同的GREATNESS。最後二十幾頁確實感受到Khun受其影響之深，各種科學理論是否可以類比認識層次

本書應該是 Michael Polanyi 1962年左右在芝加哥大學的授課講義，大約100多頁，結閤作者科學、經濟、哲學的三重背景，展開瞭對 Tacit Knowing 的介紹，期間穿插瞭作者利用 Tacit Knowing 而解答的各種哲學、經濟、政治、科學命題，有不少醍醐灌頂的觀點，比如說科學的懷疑主義和社會主義的完美主義的不可調和性
