書很有趣，說句題外的。討論方法真不是曆史學裏的必上菜。專門討論方法的時候，大部分曆史學傢都不在場。隨便討論方法的時候常常有，但是都是大傢自己覺得需要的時候會討論一下，是一種隨意的馬後炮行為，其中的交流瞬間都有運氣成分。說的再難聽和cynical點，對大多數曆史學傢來說，討論方法都是在擦p股瞭。認真係統地把討論方法當正事做的人，要麼是哲學傢，要麼是披著曆史學傢皮的哲學愛好者吧。

貝維爾藉助於後分析哲學，特彆是戴維森的語義整體論，批判地分析瞭思想史研究中的語境論和意嚮論，前者以斯金納為代錶，後者則以施特勞斯為首。亮點在於對於扭麯信念（可以稱之為意識形態）的分析。立場則介於反基礎主義和後結構主義之間尋求中庸之道，同時也展現齣分析哲學特有的簡單，清楚，明瞭。
