MUCH OF THE LITERATURE on human growth and development has, in
effect, described how an individual white, middle-class male goes
through the various stages of life. For example, let us consider that quintes-
sential representative of American child-rearing texts, the early editions of
Dr. Spock s Baby and Child Care, which described the baby in terms of "he"
does this, "he" does that, whereas his "mother" did all the rest. When femi-
nists sharply called Dr. Spock s attention to the subtle sexist, racist, if not
class-oriented, semantic biases he had been expressing, he duly incorporated
baby daughters and fathers and minority persons into the pictures and text of
his justifiably famous book. Although Dr. Spock proved himself capable of
adapting to the new consciousness of society, the same cannot be said about
the traditional literature read by even recent generations of students in the
helping professions, in spite of the obvious need for them to be aware of, and
sensitive to, a much broader range of human behavior than the white middle-
class male. This present book takes as one of its explicit goals the providing
of a broad range of readings about the young, the middle-aged, and the old;
about males and females; about blacks and whites as well as ethnic and cul-
tural groups; and about the various classes making up our society.
Another characteristic of the literature on human growth and development
is that it is often presented as if one person moves through the life span in
splendid isolation, like a spot light following the star of the show across a
stage, while the supporting cast dash in and fade out, as if fully subordinate
to the star. This is, of course, only a convenient fiction to enable writers to
deal clearly with one portion of a very complex whole. However, it still gives
the readers the impression that each stage has its star, whereas each of us in
our personal lives knows full well what a totally complex social affair it is to
do even the simplest of things, like getting a child off to school or getting a
teenager ready for a date or getting packed for a short family vacation. This
book attempts to convey a more realistic impression of life development as
involving multiple generations of persons and tandem events. As the young
infant enters the toddler stage, his or her parents likewise enter a new phase
of their family life-style--more energy is expended in monitoring the child s
movements and whereabouts, more control is exercised as the child under-
takes a wider range of activities, and more of the parents time is required
that cannot be spent in other ways. Each change in one person s life affects,
in small or large ways, the lives of persons closely involved with him or her.
Each change in the physical environment, in the neighborhood, the commu-
nity, the state and region, as well as nationally and internationally, likewise
