Rachel Cusk was born in Canada, and spent some of her childhood in Los Angeles, before her family returned to England, in 1974, when Cusk was 8 years old. She read English at New College, Oxford.
Cusk is the Whitbread Award–winning author of two memoirs, including The Last Supper, and seven novels, including Arlington Park, Saving Agnes, The Temporary, The Country Life, and The Lucky Ones.
She has won and been shortlisted for numerous prizes: her most recent novel, Outline (2014), was shortlisted for the Folio Prize, the Goldsmith's Prize and the Bailey's prize, and longlisted for Canada's Giller Prize. In 2003, Rachel Cusk was nominated by Granta magazine as one of 20 'Best of Young British Novelists'
She lives in Brighton, England.

A man and a woman are seated next to each other on a plane. They get to talking—about their destination, their careers, their families. Grievances are aired, family tragedies discussed, marriages and divorces analyzed. An intimacy is established as two strangers contrast their own fictions about their lives.
Rachel Cusk’s Outline is a novel in ten conversations. Spare and stark, it follows a novelist teaching a course in creative writing during one oppressively hot summer in Athens. She leads her students in storytelling exercises. She meets other visiting writers for dinner and discourse. She goes swimming in the Ionian Sea with her neighbor from the plane. The people she encounters speak volubly about themselves: their fantasies, anxieties, pet theories, regrets, and longings. And through these disclosures, a portrait of the narrator is drawn by contrast, a portrait of a woman learning to face a great loss.
Outline takes a hard look at the things that are hardest to speak about. It brilliantly captures conversations, investigates people’s motivations for storytelling, and questions their ability to ever do so honestly or unselfishly. 评分感覺特彆難評價這本。倒是我自己在讀英文原版書的過程中，更容易退居一個謙遜的位置，從而對作者書寫的感知力加強（其實就是普遍抱有好感，“太會寫瞭吧！”）。Rachel Cusk利用人物的談吐風格來刻畫形象，neighbor的“鬍思亂想”顯得雜亂無章甚至偶有庸俗，而女主人公在聆聽的過程中“打假”般地以一名受高等教育者的身份去糾正。最容易讀的當然是寫作課上各個人講述自己見聞的幾個部分。女主視角的流暢感和她在希臘所遇見大部分人的繁冗卡頓形成對比（讓閱讀過程一言難盡...）。RC本人寫過三本自傳，談瞭許多傢庭生活相關，在本書中也得到瞭足夠的體現。最後仍以一個小小的糾錯結束，可謂頗具匠心。隻不過這麼一個outline，究竟喻指何處？我還是把猜測默默留在心裏罷。
