Gøsta Esping-Andersen (born 24 November 1947, Næstved, Denmark) is a Danish sociologist whose primary focus is on the welfare state and its place in capitalist economies. Esping-Andersen is a professor at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona (Spain), and member of the Scientific Committee of the Juan March Institute and of the Board of Trustees and the Scientific Council at the IMDEA Social Sciences Institute, both in Madrid (Spain).

沿着Esping-Anderson的思路，福利体制的差异着重体现在个体和国家、家庭和市场的关系，由此就有去商品化、去家庭化的一系列概念。在看待政策或者体制发展变迁时，不同社会阶层的联盟和社会运动是主要动因。这两点对于中国学生可能甚至是东亚学生都是迷思，当你说个体和国家／市场的关系，我脑海里自然浮现的是家庭和国家／市场的关系；而在一个社会力量和社会运动缺失的地区，阶层联盟和运动的解释也不是很好理解。

1. 回应商品化（政治经济学的视角），把福利国家分成三类liberal（政府与市场，走向dualism）conservative corporatist（强调家庭和教会的支持，并不排斥市场）, social democratic（universalism，排斥市场）ws regime。2. 在1的基础上，解释影响福利国家形成的因素：阶级动员的性质（esp工人阶级，分析SDM），阶级-政治联盟的结构和制度化的历史遗产。3. backlash的原因：不在于spending的数量而在于阶级特征，middle class loyality。联系再分配悖论（korpi &palme）

两个中文版翻过，再翻英文版，觉得中文版不仅翻译质量不好（郑秉文版好于商务版但也生硬），而且不少解读都把重点放在自由、社民、保守三种分类学的粗细和具体模式上，忽视了作者的政治和观念史视角和预测未来的意欲。在安氏看来，三种福利国家形态虽然都可说是劳动力商品化的回应，但分别包含了三种观念与历史路径：保守的父权国家，福利不只是救济穷人，更要维护基于家庭、社区、工团和行会的社会纽带；自由主义认为国家补足市场不足即可，福利应服从人力资源商业化需要，工作与福利挂钩；社民主义的进取观点认为制度上应保障个人社会和发展权利，实践中是假定个人解体出传统社会纽带、组成工人阶级而进入福利体系。工人阶级组成与政治体制和过程当然重要，但新经济模式下大量中产阶级之政治偏好才是决定福利国家体制、以及后工业化时代前景的关键因素
