Peter van Inwagen is John Cardinal O’Hara professor of philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he is the author of numerous works, Material Beings (1990), Ontology, Identity, and Modality: Essays in Metaphysics (2001), Christian Faith and the Problem of Evil (2004), Persons: Human and Divine (2008), and Existence: Essays in Ontology (2014).

Peter van Inwagen真的是我形而上学课的噩梦，这本由他写的教材对我而言真的非常难啃。他的其他文献也让我熬了很多场夜。对比其他教材看来，我觉得这本教材真的不是新手友好型。

原版文字其实清晰易懂，由于译本正文或注释的错误、莫名其妙、文笔不佳等缘故中文版反而容易妨碍理解。 对于有意从事英美哲学研究的同好而言，在资金允许或网络上能够获取到资源（例如本书最新第4版已有PDF电子版）的情况下，应当直接阅读外文原版较好。毕竟如模态形而上学问...

如果有一门学问可以通过自嘲获得人们的同情和热爱，通过回顾自己被拉下王座、墙倒众推的历史来博得人们的肃然起敬，通过不断叙述自己如何被对手殴打的遍体鳞伤逐出各个理性领域而引发人们对其价值的肯定，那么它无疑是形上学。

导论写的挺有趣的。简直引人入胜，声情并茂。 说一个明显的翻译上的小bug。 译文第39页，引用奥义书，上来就“你是艺术！”根据前后文莫名其妙。 关艺术个啥呢？ 一看原文：That art Thou! “这就是你！”
