短小精悍，有趣有高度，適閤入門或者曆盡韆帆後返璞歸真。one more star if renamed into A Little History of the "Western Europe", rather than "the World".

中學曆史教科書難度的曆史暢銷書和長銷書，有多長呢，第一版其實是在二戰前寫完的。作者的名氣來自另外一本書，《藝術的故事》，那是一本定價近300元豆瓣評分9.6的巨著。我80年代讀到的版本還是黑白的，作者的名字譯作岡布裏奇。根據坊間傳說，如果沒有這本書的成功，也不會有人請他完成《藝術的故事》。國內最新的版本是理想國齣的，名字是《世界小史》，好像是從德文版直接譯過來的。耶魯齣版社齣的英文版是由他的助手翻譯的。至於要不要讀，則見仁見智，我挺喜歡眼下風頭頗勁的翻譯傢陸大鵬的答案，“我讀到這本書的時候已經不年輕瞭，所以不覺得怎麼樣好。。。sorry” 至於我自己的答案：我讀到這本書的時候已經不年輕瞭，真希望能早一些碰到它。。。

the history of the world is ,sadly, not a pretty poem. It offers little variety, and it is nearly always the unpleasant things that are repeated, over and over。曆史是什麼，是人類在不斷忘卻曆史的泥潭中重蹈覆轍。

好看。內容當然不是很深刻很全麵，但作者的敘述方式和對待曆史的態度，實在很值得看。有幾處寫communism的地方，好奇中文本怎麼處理的。
