He shows how Rousseau's ideas concerning the sense of a common life and the importance of mutual respect to the flourishing of healthy political and social organizations may be linked to the psychological preoccupations of the man and his attitude towards the corruption of his times.

评分当代卢梭研究中不可或缺的作品之一（但基本没人标过）、最早以全面的眼光看待amour-propre的道德地位的作品。遗憾的是，本书作者交替佩戴康德和黑格尔的眼镜来回望卢梭，这种时代错置的做法实在是尴尬。
