卡尔·休斯克（Carl E. Schorske），生于纽约市，先后就读于哥伦比亚学院和哈佛大学。他现为代顿—斯托克顿历史学教授，并一直担任普林斯顿大学欧洲文化研究中心主任。休斯克还曾在卫斯理大学和加州大学伯克利校区担任教职。他还是美国国家艺术与科学院的成员，其先前著作包括：《德国的社会民主党，1905-1917》（German Social Democracy, 1910-1917），以及《德意志的问题》（The Problem of Germany）。

评分实际读的版本是Cambridge 1992/1981。有中译本看不出来的十数页精美彩图，黑白配图质量差不多。

评分我自感没有读透这本书，原因是我对这段历史的陌生，所以我也不敢评分。这本书的主题是探讨现代主义，而作者则从十九世纪末的维也纳取材。 读罢这本书后，只感作者的探索范围极广。从开篇的建筑，到中段的政治，及至末尾的艺术。这其实就是扎实的学问功力。这或许是我读这本书后得到的最深启发。这本书是列在一份史学书单上面的... Fin-de-siecle在英语里面一般特指十九世纪末。它的含义非常微妙。十九世纪末既是欧陆的辉煌时期，也是衰败前的日落。
评分可能是点拨出了我的一个困惑：为什么20世纪Grand Tour理想的目的地不再是罗马，也没那么需要向导和纪念碑？
