Wolff端齣瞭一道極端版本的民主懷疑論。最大的優點是類似James Rachels的明晰貫徹全文，直接的點齣瞭問題所在。但是民主理論部分的論證和其它著作比起來太superficial瞭。

這是一本簡潔而嚴謹的政治哲學著作，討論的是personal autonomy和state authority如何兼容的問題，並對代議製和多數人民主進行瞭有啓發的反駁；記錄瞭一個堅信人的智慧能夠建立一個自由民主國傢的民主主義者思考和探索的過程。這裏沒有枯寜或是剋魯泡特金或是《群鬼》或是《巴黎》或是《滅亡》這些帶有空想性、曆史性和傳奇色彩的東西，但確實提齣瞭一些建構性的設想。作者最有力的觀點是：如果僅僅為瞭“有好處”或“原始契約”而放棄個體的自主權，那麼民主製與其他一切強權製度都沒有區彆。

烏托邦式的無政府主義構想，希冀autonomy將社會意識的堅石消融，將institution與state摧毀，將人社會性的異化就此解除。

真的要想想沃爾夫究竟在反對什麼

清晰扼要。總體來說第二章最為齣彩，雖其目的在於分析以往理論，卻也不失為一篇齣色的經典民主理論批判性導讀；若乾觀點可與薩托利的《民主新論》相互參照。值得注意的是，沃爾夫所要質疑的，是服從權威的[道德]基礎。
