这本书涉及的数学很浅显，但这种数学史的写法非常有趣。最后一章的内容是科普书中最喜欢谈论的，但同样的题材，Stillwell写得比所有我见过的作者都清晰和准确。Stillwell写的其实很粗糙，很多地方都是一笔带过，对比一下《可视化复分析》就知道这本书中的一句话可以是整一章的内容。这本书的意义在于：数学系的学生可以知道他们所习以为常的概念是如何产生和发展的，而且不至于陷入无甚意义的细节。至于这些数学史的知识是否重要，只能是仁者见仁智者见智了。
