著者简介

Jonathan Harr lives and works in Northampton, Massachusetts, where he has taught nonfiction writing at Smith College. He is a former staff writer at New England Monthly and has written for The New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine.

Harr spent nine years researching and writing A Civil Action, which was published in 1995, subsequently nominated for a National Book Award, and awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award.

之前上课读完the Buffalo disaster老师就推荐了这本，说不是每一个案子都伸张正义了，这个就输的很惨，破产的主角还来我们学校演讲过。。。。终于抽空读了写的真好。。。

3年前想读的。教授帮忙要求punitive damage 有种神来之笔，可惜最后案子因为原告经济不足以支持，只能以和解告终。原告律师自己贴钱的巨大风险，甚至要向信用卡公司借高利贷，最后还搞到自己破产。法官读起来一开始还不偏不倚，但后来被写得像一面倒支持好朋友，处处针对原告了。关键的一点是法官用“自己的判断”，只对Grace的污染行为加以确认，直接打消了对另一家的污染行为指控(即使陪审团不同意)，而另一家在审判过程中隐瞒了不少对自己有害的证据，之后上诉法院也只是把案子发回同一个法官审判，这就进入了一种死循环之中。

4.5。本学期完成的第二本阅读教材。最后那段真是。。。一个人是要被什么摧毁的过程中才有可能意识到存在的真相的。被摧毁而未消亡，就有可能抵达真正的自己。很残酷。所幸他游向深海之后，最后还是回来了。
