The Good Earth is a novel by Pearl S. Buck, first published in 1931, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1932. It is the first book in a trilogy that includes the books Sons (1932) and A House Divided (1935).

算做很有观察的作品，拿普利策实至名归。但是从情节的设置，特别是人物的命运，在针对同时期的中文作品中，并不算出众。
评分不哭穷、不卖惨、不搞通奸、不闹革命，用极为细腻的笔触，把农民的婚丧生育、农贸的来龙去脉、土地的流转利用、城乡的连结和分化、大饥荒和农民的境遇，写得真实细腻。我读一些中国知识分子包括农村出身的知识分子写旧农村的小说，常觉得怎么就这么“隔”，就像是从墙外往墙里望，不通透。赛珍珠的视角，却处处围绕农民的吃喝、生育和活计。别的东西，怜悯也好批判也好，任何有先验性的判断，都被摒除了。所以读来是从墙里往墙外看，代入感很强。单从反应旧中国三农的真实性上看，这本书是很好的。这不得益于赛珍珠写作技法（近纪实文学）的先进性，但怎么讲呢？文学性真的就会差一点点。
评分第一次完整读完一本原版小说，真的花了不少时间。一个美国人讲一个中国故事，1931年出版之后，拿到普利策奖和诺贝尔文学奖，80多年后依旧畅销，这使我产生了极大的好奇，从而拿起书来一探究竟。珀尔·布克夫人（赛珍珠）说：我只会写我所了解的，而我只了解中国，因为我一直住在那儿。
评分一开始感叹O-Lan的坚忍与能干，也随着Wong Lung家的由贫穷变得富裕而开心，到后来遭遇饥荒，对他们流落南方的同情你，再到后来回到北方土地上越来越家大业大时，就开始担心他们会衰落。然而他们家没衰落，只是O-Lan去了，子孙满堂却也事事纷扰，直到后来Wong Lung已经也要离世，他们家的孩子还是前程似锦，但土地却摆脱不了被卖掉的命运。在Wong Lung看来，土地就是生命，但是时代在改变，他们的子孙对土地的感情已不再深厚。这个男人的一生就像一朵花一样，排尽万难，终于开花结果，到最后在枯黄凋落。最最难受的是Wong Lung硬要拿走O-Lan的珍珠时，她一边洗着衣服一边落泪的场景。
