最有趣和有用的是社会和历史背景部分。如墨索里尼事实上提倡了一种随后新浪潮赖以闻名的纪实主义，如《甜蜜的生活》还原了1960年代意大利作为世界电影之都&LA般的永恒之城的mores和popular culture，狗仔队之名也是由此而出。《大路》被Marxist批判被Catholics称赞，到《甜蜜的生活》则正好反过来，等等。
