Lean’s masterpiece offers an unassuming, intriguing entry to Republican Chinese history, where a wide array of characters, from the masses to the elites and back to the masses, are introduced; continuities and changes, extending both ways, are explored; seemingly trivial(ised), sentimental(ised) issues are given due analysis. 海外中國研究的上佳之作。
