Malcolm McGregor has written a comprehensive account of the Athenian "Golden Age", in which naval and political advances coincided with the Athenians' greatest achievements in art, literature, philosophy and social theory. In Athenian democracy, effective government was achieved by a balance between open public debate and the role of individual decisive statesmen, such as Pericles. This brought peace and prosperity, if only shortlived and, McGregor asserts, contributed to the extraordinary cultural ascendancy of fifth-century Athens. The book is intended for students and teachers of classics, ancient history and political science. Malcolm McGregor is Professor Emeritus in Classics at the University of British Columbia.
