用建筑绘画历史地理种族民族性等穿针引线，采访引用类比各行各业，讲述了荷兰足球几代人+全攻全守的萌芽成形演变（约翰是个神奇的人类）+关键赛事+为什么老亚军和输掉点球大战。 感觉看了一本关于荷兰这个国家的入门作。 跨界跨得，有时觉得作者太刷逼格（这都能扯到一起→貌似有点道理），但是蛮有趣（我对建筑绘画历史地理种族民族性都有兴趣）。 成书偏早（2000年）。修订版加了一章2010年世界杯决赛观感，作者对西班牙更荷兰而荷兰放弃荷兰痛心疾首（有种围绕一颗小行星做了几年研究，然后小行星被撞没了的悲催感），尽管他极力找多人叙述淡化自己。 感谢Chorono、Bobbygu415译到17章，努力啃完剩下3章英文。

必须安利给足球迷。

能把如此多互不相关的线索串联起来，作者真不容易了，可以当做一本荷兰当代史的入门教材。

并非一本讨论分析荷兰足球技战术风格的书，而是通过荷兰足球写荷兰艺术文化传统和民族性的社科作品。作者以荷兰足球的全攻全守风格为起点，写出足球与历史、宗教、种族、艺术的发展变化之间互为因果的联系。相比之下，少数纯写足球的章节反而没意思。 最精华的论述：荷兰足球对球场空间的利用来自荷兰自古以来开发自己特殊地形的传统以及从伦勃朗到蒙德里安钟情于抽象空间的艺术理念；荷兰队在大赛中屡次的自杀式崩盘反应出的荷兰以蔑视功利结果来抢占道德制高点的民族价值观。
