Through these stories, Kristof and WuDunn help us see that the key to economic progress lies in unleashing women’s potential. They make clear how so many people have helped to do just that, and how we can each do our part. Throughout much of the world, the greatest unexploited economic resource is the female half of the population. Countries such as China have prospered precisely because they emancipated women and brought them into the formal economy. 尼可拉斯·D.克里斯多夫 & 雪莉·邓恩 (Nicholas D. Kristof & Sheryl Wudunn) ，在担任《纽约时报》驻北京特派员期间获得普利策新闻奖（Pulitzer Prize)，他们也是第一对共同获得该奖的夫妇。克里斯多夫先生又因《纽约时报》的特写专栏而再度荣获普利策奖。他也担任过《纽约时报》香港、北京和东京的分社社长及副主编。邓恩女士在《纽约时报》担任商业版编辑，同时为东京与北京的驻外记者。她是第一位获得普利策奖的亚裔美国人。

这是一本很好的发展学入门书女性作为发展问题中的直接受害者与问题制造者（虽然多数时候迫于无奈或没有选择）个人与社会发展的枢纽隐藏在错综复杂的文化与贫困的交接处作者很费心采访了很多人资料丰富对于不同类型的发展机构都给与中肯的评价只是有些时候人物描写过于二元化脸谱化词风好像联合国宣传画来自于社会其他组别如男性、社区领导、援助人员的背景音被刻意削弱故事反而没了真实的力量建议作者参考纪录片印度的女儿那种冷静的真实与倾听
