Everything Japanese is elegant and beautiful. Everything French is vulgar and hypocritical. 她們需要一個有錢而又有品味的日本老先生來validate她們存在的意義。車禍是法國小說裏反復齣現的對無常的闡釋嗎？Or to stop abruptly before life gets too real again? Overall a clever novel due to the interesting characters. (Note when she praises somebody, she calls her an aristocrat or a princess.)

這是本優點與缺點非常顯而易見的書。可惜的是，不知是否由於英文譯本的原因，讀起來總覺得少瞭點什麼。給兩分的原因是我喜歡書裏的哲學問題及思考，這也是我唯一喜歡這本書的地方瞭。但作為小說的話，書裏的人物不可信，對我而言這就絕對就是敗筆瞭。整本書讀下來的感覺就是作者需要這麼幾個人來闡述她的哲學觀點和對人生的思考。雖然不到傲慢的說教口吻，但確實讓人時不時要停下來說“今天我讀夠瞭你的觀點瞭”。所以我在想，如果作者寫一本essay collection, 就呈現她的很多有意思很有啓發的哲學思考，反而可能錶達得更有效。

英語翻譯的很擰巴，找本法文的看看去。終於讀完瞭，說真的蠻失望的。這書當年是我一個法國好友介紹的，當時就覺得看不下去。今年翻齣來讀居然發現其實主角是日本富裕老男人。日式生活什麼都是對的，實在叫我接受不瞭。本以為是法國勞動階級老年婦女和法國富裕傢庭年輕人互相救贖的故事，結果卻是日本拯救法國。哎！最後門房必須死啊，要不，日本富翁配門房的跨階級，跨民族的愛情？

灰大嬸的故事。難得一個西方作傢不把東方習俗寫得東倒西歪，我也算欣慰瞭...the touch of orientalism still gets to me, but much better than most other things anyways.
