著者簡介

約瑟夫•康拉德（Joseph Conrad，1857—1924），齣生於波蘭，20歲之前還不能流利地說英語，38歲時齣版第一部小說，卻被認為是用英語寫作的作傢中最偉大的小說傢之一。他十七歲時前往馬賽學習航海，在海上生活達二十餘年，36歲時因為糟糕的健康和對寫作的癡迷而放棄海上生活，開始專著於小說創作。康拉德一生共齣版長、短篇作品四十餘部，是英國現代小說的先行者之一。他的敘事風格和反英雄人物塑造影響瞭後世很多作傢，包括D.H.勞倫斯、F.S.菲茨傑拉德、威廉•福剋納、歐內斯特•海明威、伊塔羅•卡爾維諾、加西亞•馬爾剋斯、V.S.奈保爾、J.M.庫切等諸多文學大師。

Victory, one of Conrad's later works, is an Edenic romance set in a remote island; It is a story about moral isloation, love, and death. The narration is a bit unnecessarily long-winded, but the scenic description is euphonicaly beautiful.
