ADOLF PORTMANN<br >COLOUR SENSE AND THE MEANING OF COLOUR<br >FROM A BIOLOGIST S POINT OF VIEW<br >The garden at Casa Eranos is a tempting distraction for the biologist， yet it<br >makes me mindful of the need for brevity if I am to speak about the world<br >of colour. The abundant green of its foliage has its chief meaning for the<br >biologist as a sign of the grand metabolism of nature， the formation of<br >organic substances in plants through the action of sunlight. If I were to go<br >into this aspect of the colour problem， I would have to deal too with the<br >role of our red blood pigmentation， and this would mean entering upon a<br >vast field which is the proper concern of physics and chemistry. All that<br >would have no place in today s survey. The theme of this conference is<br >the experience of colour. Thus I must put aside the problems connected<br >with green leaves and red blood. The green of this garden must thus serve<br >merely as a background for the flowers and fruits whose striking colours<br >attract the searching eyes of insects and birds.
