FOREWORD<br >I first met the author and his wife in New York City<br >after he had contacted one of my friends. He told me<br >that he was going to write a book about the Native<br >Americans on the East Coast. I liked his idea of the<br >book， which was to inform re~tders that Native Amer-<br >icans still exist in the East. I had read in some books<br >that we did not exist anymore. This had always troubled<br >me since I knew of no way to inform people that we<br >are still around and that we had not been extinguished.<br >The object of this book was to say "Hello. Here we<br >are. We are fine."<br > Since our first meeting， the author and I have<br >met to discuss the book and its contents， and from time<br >to time I would hear from him about his progress.<br > He was doing something that many writers fail to<br >do. He was meeting the people he was writing about and<br >asking them "What do you want said about your peo-<br >ple?" and "What do you want changed from the usual<br >writing?" And he was allowing the people to see what<br >he had written before it was published.<br > Many misconceptions about the Native Americans<br >have been passed along through the years. This book<br >offers an opportunity to have some of these stereo-<br >types dispelled. It is very important to us that people<br >realize we still exist and are still carrying out the duties<br >that were handed down to us by our ancestors.<br ><br >
