单伟建的这本书真实还原了知青在内蒙古戈壁上山下乡的点点滴滴，和十年之内从普通知青变成沃顿商学院教授梦幻般的经历。作者站在写给外国人看的角度来写这本书，戈壁知青的经历占了80%的篇幅，很多细节在熟悉该历史背景的读者看来难免有点冗长，但在外国人看来则真实得有点匪夷所思。干练的叙事手法加上作者特有的黑色幽默让这本书增色不少

四星，因为共同母语，英语并非阅读障碍。单的经历教人唏嘘，但也足够传奇。关于50代的历史，我们早就从父辈的口述与文学碎片中得以拼凑。单只不过又将我了解的又一一印证，但是他没有在戈壁抛掷年华的坚韧，总是愿意为机会做出尝试的努力着实令人佩服。这样的人，即使流放戈壁也最终会获得成功。虽然当他最终被大学录取时我忍不住欢呼，他与恋人邂逅我开卷微笑。但是我觉得这并不值得在经济学人年度书单占有一席之地

很personal的一本书，很传奇，戈壁的生活真是苦啊。除了大陆，台湾也买不到，只有香港有。

读完了老单的前40年，一本流水账。这是一条多么漫长、曲折、湍急的流水啊。想想踏足其中，也让人多少胆寒。老单是一个聪明绝顶的斗士（想想一个把每人都变成斗士的时代也挺操蛋的），是任何时代都少之又少的精英层。不过在书最后一页，老单试图说，在这条激流里跋涉、一步走错，他也可能就是因为恋爱而入狱，并再找不到出戈壁之路的兵团战友“二狗”。

一部新中国的历史。少年时期在戈壁的磨练也算是给单的身体打下了坚强的基础？
