In a remote Polish village, Janina devotes the long, dark winter days to studying astrology, translating the poetry of William Blake, and serving as caretaker for the summer homes of wealthy Warsaw residents. Her reputation as a crank and a recluse is only amplified by her not-so-secret preference for the company of animals over humans. She's devastated when her two beloved dogs disappear. Then her neighbor, Bigfoot, turns up dead. As corpses pile up in increasingly strange circumstances, Janina inserts herself into the investigation, certain that she knows whodunit. If only anyone would pay her mind . . .
Olga Tokarczuk is one of Poland's most celebrated writers, translated into more than thirty languages. She is the author of ten works of fiction, including Flights, which won the Man Booker International Prize and was a finalist for the National Book Award in Translation.
This novel is brilliantly designed and gracefully articulated. It appears as a crime story but explores life, William Blake, and nature. I like her sense of humor and cynicism, and the deep compassion for all the living creatures. If the Fall is the beginning, can we fall even lower? So relevant to today's environmental issues.
評分“If evil created the world, then good must destroy it.”(I had hoped everything was really done by the animals.????(我與本書女主惟二的區彆隻在於年齡與自信力,她能夠篤信她的選擇,而我挖到根上總是連自己也一起推翻。
評分a fascinating read with great clarity.
