In a heavily mortgaged country house, an heiress’s sinister guardian attempts to trap her in a bedroom with a rare Indian swamp adder—a murder averted only by the timely intervention of Sherlock Holmes. 霍剋的老福仿作，有幾篇如果不是掛上老福的名字，我還以為在讀山姆霍桑。盡管如此，能再次讀到霍剋真是太好瞭

评分霍剋的短篇數量那麼多，然而他幾乎將最好的點子都集中在霍桑醫生係列，其餘係列的水準其實並不理想。這本緻敬作，和卡爾那本《福爾摩斯的功績》相差無幾，若不“背離”原作，在不可能犯罪上大造文章，不是忠實福迷的話，看頭終究不大。《馬戲團花魁》與《莊園宅邸探案記》兩篇算是矮個兒挑的高個，最後一篇《泰坦尼剋號冒險記》以柯南·道爾的處女作《約翰·史密斯的告白》的主人公之名為橋梁，將福爾摩斯與福翠爾無縫鏈接在一起，手法很是獨特，但是由於篇幅有限，加上謀殺過於簡單，本可以寫得更好的，實在可惜。
