In this 2005 book, Eiko Ikegami uncovers a complex history of social life in which aesthetic images became central to Japan's cultural identities. The people of premodern Japan built on earlier aesthetic traditions in part for their own sake, but also to find space for self-expression in the increasingly rigid and tightly controlled Tokugawa political system. In so doing, they incorporated the world of the beautiful within their social life which led to new modes of civility. They explored horizontal and voluntary ways of associating while immersing themselves in aesthetic group activities. Combining sociological insights in organizations with prodigious scholarship on cultural history, this book explores such wide-ranging topics as networks of performing arts, tea ceremony and haiku, the politics of kimono aesthetics, the rise of commercial publishing, the popularization of etiquette and manners, the vogue for androgyny in kabuki performance, and the rise of tacit modes of communication.

最初閱讀到此書的日文版的時候，真是感覺太碉堡瞭。真正真銘地堪稱日本版的《文明的進程》（法國人的故事當然也很好）。此書從大江健三郎和川端康成的美學倫理入手，切入到日本社會禮節，美學與秩序的討論，然後縱橫無盡地展開對安土-桃山，江戶社會史的描述。歌舞伎，連歌，印刷術，浮世繪諸多的內容簡直是讓人看呆瞭。英文版的敘述多少在語言上的確感到相較日文版有些不足。如同牧野成一所言，日文中若乾特殊的錶現法，英文翻譯不能？這樣的事例，在文學與藝術史中大概尤其的多。不過，僅就此書的旨趣而言，像這樣傑齣的作品，大概真是前代未聞的嘗試。日本近世史絢爛的畫捲和曆史社會學的微妙解釋，真是讓人感到大絕贊！
