著者簡介

約翰·契佛的小說很多，但是，最為齣色的還是他的短篇小說，由於他在小說中著意刻畫城市郊區以外的中産階級聚居區的社會生活和精神們風貌，不無遺憾地記錄瞭這些中産階級傢庭以及人物的生活和心態，因此在美國和世界文壇有“美國郊外契訶夫”的美稱。

約翰·契弗（Cheever.J.）（美）（1912——1982），美國現代重要的小說傢，生於馬薩諸塞州昆西市，讀大學預科時因叛逆被學校開除。1930年瞭錶第一篇小說《被開除》，從此一發不可收拾。1957年發錶第一篇長篇小說《華普肖一傢》，之後發錶《華肖醜聞》、《彈丸山莊》。自選集《約翰·弗短篇小說集》於1977齣版，獲得瞭1978年全國圖書奬和普利策小說奬，1977年，長篇小說《獵鷹者監獄》問世。契弗一生著述豐富，尤以短篇見長，有“美國郊外契訶夫”之譽。

《契佛短篇作品集》集中大多數作品，在《紐約客》刊登過。“代錶瞭契氏寫瞭三十多年短篇小說的總成績。”齣版當年竟然成為暢銷書，一印再印。

吳魯芹先生在《英美十六傢》中對他推崇備至，他的作品“凡經刊布者，無不讀也”。又在另一篇文章說：“先讀《契弗短篇集》，讀上一二十篇，你就會發現他的偉大，發現何以人傢要恭維他是美國的契可夫，到那時你就會不忍釋手，繼續讀下去，讀完全書的六十一篇。”
