With the rise of science, we moderns believe, the world changed irrevocably, separating us forever from our primitive, premodern ancestors. But if we were to let go of this fond conviction, Bruno Latour asks, what would the world look like? His book, an anthropology of science, shows us how much of modernity is actually a matter of faith. What does it mean to be modern? What difference does the scientific method make? The difference, Latour explains, is in our careful distinctions between nature and society, between human and thing, distinctions that our benighted ancestors, in their world of alchemy, astrology, and phrenology, never made. But alongside this purifying practice that defines modernity, there exists another seemingly contrary one: the construction of systems that mix politics, science, technology, and nature. The ozone debate is such a hybrid, in Latour's analysis, as are global warming, deforestation, even the idea of black holes. As these hybrids proliferate, the prospect of keeping nature and culture in their separate mental chambers becomes overwhelming--and rather than try, Latour suggests, we should rethink our distinctions, rethink the definition and constitution of modernity itself. His book offers a new explanation of science that finally recognizes the connections between nature and culture--and so, between our culture and others, past and present. Nothing short of a reworking of our mental landscape. "We Have Never Been Modern" blurs the boundaries among science, the humanities, and the social sciences to enhance understanding on all sides. 评分translation purification 中间开始跳了,然后结了一下尾.......反正硬啃就算看懂了句子也消化不了。挺有意思的(意思就是以后还要再翻)。句式挺简单的,单词没概念,整体再回味(意思就是自己建构illusion)——给个动力,就是把这书庸俗化成英语阅读材料。
评分首先他这种中学生作文式的文风着实影响阅读,其次,否认了所有先验的范畴后(且不论用不对称来概括那些范畴本身是否以偏概全),他所谓的网络也显得过于包容以至于空泛了。
评分为看懂这本书顺带看了布鲁尔和拉图尔的辩论,好玩得不行。布鲁尔像个失宠失势的小孩子,各种遭受误解和打击的受伤体。本来我觉得拉图尔太自以为是玩小聪明,但回应批评时他气度翩翩,一副胜利者的自在和旁若无人样。小聪明啊!装逼啊!你以为把人类学的民族志方法弄进现代科技的研究就成ANT啦。anyway,本着”人类学拯救现代知识界“,支持一把。
评分从科技史和物出发的拉图尔,还是觉得有些故弄玄虚。现代制度里人们总要从hybriditiy里纯化自己的研究对象/处理对象,比如波义尔的自然和霍布斯的社会。而后现代就是在自然和社会不断拉大的距离里,迷失的语言、符号系统。
